Day 45 - The Sierras Loom

Mile 676.1 to 698.3 - 22.2 miles

Long day today. I set off at 5.40 am to beat the heat of the big 2500 foot climb which topped out at 8000 feet. The track took us past ground zero of the fire at Chimney Peak campground
The PCT itself was completely untouched which dealt to the rumours of 8 mile of trail being destroyed.
The first water stop of the day at Fox Mill and I was getting grumpy with the continuation of the bug attacks. Can you tell??
As we topped the climb you could see the snow covered Sierras looming. By this stage though all shade had disappeared as we spent 10 miles in a major burn area that has never recovered. There however were a couple of things to occupy the mind. The Rockhouse Mountains were impressive
And for the first time since Deep Creek we have a real river - the south fork of the Kern River
The enticement of camping next to flowing water was too much to resist & I stopped 4 miles short of Kennedy Meadows. I had Puck for company who I hadn't seen for a long time on trail. Also Roadrunner was with us & I hadnt seen him since Scout & Frodo's way back in April - a top man as he carries whisky in one of his water pouches. Kennedy Meadows tomorrow as we prepare for the Sierras...Weta
