Today was all about Crater Lake. Crater Lake is stunning. Drop. Dead. Gorgeous. Even the 1000 foot climb up to Rim Village is quickly forgotten as you get your first glimpse of what is in front of you. When Mt Mazama blew up, it left a crater that filled with water - like our Lake Taupo. The water colour is an astonishing blue and taking photos does not do it justice. These series of shots are from atop the 8000 foot Watchman Lookout on the Rim Trail
It was all about getting the ultimate shot which meant Tiptoe going to extremes
The place was teeming with tourists as you can see from the car park
The recent fire closed the PCT but most thru hikers take the Rim Trail anyway. We talked to a couple of Washington firefighters & thanked them for their work. Both had been to NZ & had loved it down under. Here is one of their base camps
The fire was still smouldering with the acrid smell if smoke still thick in the air
When we reluctantly prized ourselves away from the Rim the sights switched to Mt Thielsen
We hope to scamper up the peak tomorrow....Weta
Amazing views!
