Day 74 - 4th July - Independence Day

Mile 1070.2 to Mile 1087.3 - 17.1 miles

For the USA, 4th July is a BIG day. The locals were out in force along the trail with the car park at Carson Pass Ranger Station full. The day was beautiful to match the occasion with clear blue skies. Once again we dropped back a gear to delay our Tahoe arrival until the 5th. There were no super serious climbs with an 800 foot climb up the side of Elephants Back made quicker by talking to
Proton about NZ & his home of Seattle
We stopped mid morning at Carson Pass Ranger Station where folk drop in trail magic for the thru hikers i.e. fruit, coke, snacks etc for our benefit
We then worked out way over a saddle to the Truckee River where the wildflowers were stunning
After a lunch stop at Showers Lake it was a steady haul to our campsite which overlooked Lake Tahoe
The site gave us a view of the fireworks at night. The state border with Nevada runs down the centre of the lake so I could leave California, which some will do for the casino's etc.
A quick 3 miles tomorrow then a hitch to South Lake Tahoe for a nero & probably a zero.....Weta
